The reason I decided to write this article, is because people wonder about the most effective way to change a negative pattern or release a negative emotion. The key to effective change is Somatic Embodiment.
Let’s break down the terms.
Somatic means body, and embodiment refers to the attention and focus of consciousness to be in the body.
But am I not in my body all the time?
The truth is that we are constantly in and out of our body, and the more trauma a person holds, the more severe the dissociation is. And if you heard the term dissociation before, this is what it means, the inability to be embodied.
If we don’t embodie we can’t heal, and we can also miss out on a lot of information from our environment and other people. We have to be in our bodies to have access to intuition or gut feeling.
So why aren’t people embodied all the time?
Our bodies hold a lot of dense emotions and sensations that can feel heavy and difficult to handle. Imagine all the undealt baggage of your entire existence, being stored in your body. It’s like a storage room that has never been cleaned, and yet you kept storing unwanted things inside it. Then one day you open the door and walk in. Your first reaction may be to just walk away, lock the door, and never open it again. It can like a lot.
However, if you decided to clean that room, then you may actually notice the high ceilings, tall pillars, and the nuances of natural light coming through its bright windows, beaming on the seat that always belonged to you. The most sacred seat of your being. And when you sit in it, you know you are ruler and leader of your life.
And yes, you guessed it. That is the seat of embodiment. And when you sit in that chair, healing is possible, because no matter what messes you may see and negative emotions you may feel, your nervous system will say “I am safe to feel it now, it’s not so scary anymore”.
